People who start collecting bonsai trees quickly find they are hooked. Bonsai trees are a form of living art. They are becoming more popular especially with city dwellers with small apartments and gardens.

Most trees are of the conifer variety as these are better suited to Bonsai, e.g. Juniper, Cypress , Cedar, Pine, Spruce.

Other trees such as Azalia, Maples, Beech, Serrisa, Pieris etc. also popular along with some natives like Pohutakawa, Kophai, NZ Mirror tree.

Any tree with a good hard trunk, nice spreading branch structure and small foliage are best suited, big flowers and leaves do not look to scale, so are not suitable.
